Kirby - but very expensive - Dyson also has a good product but also quite expensive - I recommend going with a name brand that is not too fancy, not too heavy, and looks simple (doesn't have all kinds of attachments that you will rarely use but end up paying for anyway). The bagless models are the cheapest to maintain for obvious reasons - if you buy one of these and it lasts 3-5 years, it will have already paid for itself several times over - also ask your friends and family (the ones that actually use them) for their experience - it is also a good idea to spend a few minutes asking the people that sell vacuum cleaners - you can get a lot of free advice on the internet too. Consumer reports is great to have but isn't free. Good luck - oh by the way we have a Hoover and it has worked well for 3 years - it is a bagless model and we really like that - we bought it on sale at Home Depot - we will never go back to vacuums that require a bag.

Are all $9.99 per room carpet cleaners are scammers?
honestcarp
My guess is yes. I worked for three different companies in two years, before going out on my own.
One would advertise 5 rooms for $49.95... you'd be lucky if I did it for $100.
Another did the selling, I just did the work. He had 3 crews out on the road most days. A lot of times people were not getting what they expected and there were lots of problems.
One was reasonably honest. He charged 25 cents per sq. ft. Every room or area had a 100 sq ft ($25) minimum.
I just charge by the square foot. I have 3 levels of service... vacuum & plain water steam, gets out old soap residue, good for sensitive people.
This I charge 15 cents per sq ft. For pre-spot, soap extract, rinse and dry, I charge 25 cents per sq ft. Add protective treatment, pet stains, deodorant, or other services, it is an extra 5 cents per sq ft per service.
I am very reasonable. People say I'm high. Then they call the bait and switch guy who robs them, or they never call me at all, just assume we are all crooks.
How can I come across as reliable, honest and hard working at a fair price when a few bums hurt my entire industry?
Answer
you have to show them for what they are
people are not stupid
just greedy
so your job is to explain what they do and show they cannot do a decent job with all the overhead for a mere 10 dollars per room
in sales parlance it's called showing them the value
besides, you will not target such bargain hunters, such people never learn
but those who see their house as an personal investment
think of it this way
you invested in yourself with equipment and a vehicle
you could have gone the cheap route, but you probably invested fro the long haul, after all you are going to make your living of those truck and tools, so it's no place to go cheap
the same goes true for your targeted clients
you are not going to do flyer adverting the same switch and bait
you are going to target the more affluent, where you can charge a decent price and get word of mouth referrals, something that no cold calling or flyer can beat
