best vacuum cleaner with pets image

I'm shopping for a new vacuum cleaner and just wondering what brand and type you have and how well it works on cleaning up dog hair. My Bissell Powerforce is falling apart and in the year that I've had my dog, it just never did a good job. I've looked in stores and online and I'm just about ready to pull my own hair out. I know there are the 'pet hair' types, but are there any regular vacuums that work just as well? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

After living over twenty four years with a double coated breed that sheds profusely, without a doubt my Dyson has been the best vacuum I have owned. There is no need to get the Animal version, it merely comes with more attachments, it isn't more powerful.
My Dyson is now three years old and does the same outstanding job it did when it was new. It works on hardwood and carpet equally as well.

How do I get a bad pet smell out of a vacuum cleaner?

This vacuum cleaner was used to clean carpets in and around a pet/dog area and now the air that comes out of the front vent stinks bad! I have changed the bag but they don't make filters for this model anymore. I doubt that the parts are immersible. The smell when I vacuum is keeping me from using it!
Answer
Wipe it inside and out with ammonia. Clean the filter with ammonia if you can.
Let it dry.
Wipe again with liquid fabric softener in water.
