According to what I know of physics, a "12 Amp" motor designed for 120V service should be about 1-1/2 horsepower (assuming 80% efficiency). I just removed the motor from my "12 Amp" vacuum cleaner, and was not-too-surprised to see it was the the size of a sewing machine (1/10 HP) motor.
Now, I realize the vacuum cleaner is designed to blow air through the motor, so they can allow it to generate more heat, and make it smaller, than other sorts of motors. Still, I have a hard time imagining this little thing delivering anything close to 1/2 horsepower, let alone 1-1/2.
Does anyone know how much mechanical horsepower a vacuum cleaner motor delivers? That is, what is the efficiency?
My motivation is to quickly, not elegantly, improvise a repair on my $15 drill press. Buying a $100 replacement motor for a $15 drill is out of the question. A second hand furnace blower motor will turn up eventually, but I want to drill holes now. I would leave the blower attached for efficient cooling.

Vacuum cleaner advertising was subject to so much lying as to the horsepower being delivered that use of the term was banned, only the peek amp usage was allowed - because that is what triggers circuit breakers. If people think it is directly related to vacuum power, etc., ah well....
In your case, you are taking the peak amps as being the continuous amps which it would have to deliver in running a drill press, but that amperage is delivered to compressed or suction air only when jammed when the motor is almost stalled or doing very little "work" - force in motion.
If you check out the motor (if you can) you will find that it turns at very high RPM, much more than the simple pulleys in your cheap drill press can reduce to proper drilling RPM and the "blower" is going to deliver very little cooling air as the motor slows under load.
If you look around, you might find the alternative to a $100 replacement motor is to buy a $60 drill press with a similar motor already in it. Otherwise you might haunt garage and estate sales and see what people are selling off cheap.

Can I GET A VACUUM CLEANER REWIRED?

Mein electrolux went on the fritz tonite, I need a repar cause I got a home to clean und a load to iron. If there is faulty wiring in mein home I need to know. But das cleaner aint got suction und I need to get mein carpet clean frtom crumbs. Please advice, Can I get the appliance rewired???

Unplug the vacuum cleaner's power cord from the wall outlet. Press the button on the vacuum's front with one hand. Pull the cover off with the other. Twist the dust bag off the socket inside the vacuum. Throw the dust bag in the trash.
Place the vacuum on its side on the floor. Place a sheet of newspaper beneath the brush/roller assembly at the front end of the vacuum.
Remove the screw at each end of the brush/roller assembly, using a Phillips screwdriver; if there are tabs at each end as well, push these tabs in prior to removing the screws.
Pull off the cover plate that is lying on the brush/roller assembly. Place it aside. Remove the screws at each end of the brush roller assembly that are now visible using a Phillips jeweler's screwdriver; if there are tabs at each end as well, push these tabs in prior to removing the screws.
Pull the brush/roller assembly out of the vacuum cleaner. Shake the brush/roller assembly over the newspaper to dislodge loose dust and other contaminants. Place the assembly aside.
Aim a flashlight into the compartment that was covered by the brush/roller assembly. Locate the end of the motor shaft inside the compartment -- the motor is across from the fan assembly that is also inside the compartment.
Grip the end of the fan belt that has slipped off the motor shaft with the jaws of a needle-nose pliers. Pull the end over to the motor shaft. Place the end around the slotted end of the motor shaft. Remove the pliers. Rotate the motor shaft clockwise to seat the belt, using your fingers.
Place the brush/roller assembly back into the compartment and reattach the screws. Place the cover plate back over the brush/roller assembly and reattach the screws.
Twist the end of a new dust bag onto the socket on the inside compartment that is covered by the vacuum cleaner's cover. Press the button and reattach the cover. Release the button. Right the vacuum cleaner. Dispose of the newspaper in the trash.
