While a Betta may live in poor quality water, the water itself can stretch for many, many miles. And while a Betta may resort to living a shallow puddle for a while, he will eventually jump and begin swimming in the rice paddies soon enough. The labyrinth organ compensates for poor water quality, but that doesn't mean a Betta MUST be confined to a small space.
Please stop giving advice if you don't know what you are talking about.
A Betta needs an upfront of at least 5 gallons. Tanks that are longer than they are high or wide work best. Get the following with your tank:
- A Heater. Bettas will lose appetite, color, and slowly become lethargic in cold water. Cold for them is anything below 74 (degree Fahrenheit) but you should set your heater to anywhere between 78-82.
- A sponge filter. Sponge filters create minimal currents in the tank. Remember, Bettas hate currents because in the wild they live in shallow, stagnant waters. The sponge filter will allow a place for beneficial bacteria to grow on, and will keep the water clean without giving a strong current to annoy your Betta.
- Some gravel or pebbles for the bottom of the tank.
- A tall plant (or more). Stick to either live plants, or silk plants. Don't take plastic. The plastic can easily tear off the fins of your Betta.
- A light, for seeing your Betta. Aquarium plants also require light.
- Any decorative ornaments for the tank.
- Water conditioner.
- Betta food.
- Net for catching him.
- Gravel vacuum.
- Liquid fertilizer if you have a real plant.
So to answer your question:
- Tap water IS NOT allowed. You need to treat it with water conditioner.
Other info:
- Rinse the tank with water, and at the same time check for any leaks.
- Place the tank on a sturdy stand
- Rinse gravel/pebbles separately.
- Place gravel/pebbles in the tank.
- Fill tank halfway with water. At this point if you have any real plant, put it in.
- Fill the tank to the top.
- Place in heater, filter, ornaments, light.
- Treat the water with water conditioner.
- Place in your Betta, but dont dump him in. Float his bag on the water for 15 minutes. Then open it a bit and mix some tank water with the bag water. Do this for another 5 minutes. Then, take a net, and take your Betta OUT OF THE BAG, and place him in the tank.
+ It is normal for them to not eat for a few days in their new home. They are still busy exploring.
Maintenance:
* Once a week, remove 25% of the water with a gravel vacuum. When the siphon is created, vacuum the floor of the tank. This way you clean out the poop and left over food in your tank while removing water. So essentially its 25% of the dirtiest water. Replace it with clean, conditioned water. Make sure it's temperature is almost the same as the temperature of your tank water, to not shock your Betta.
* Keep the air pump for the sponge filter ABOVE the level of the tank. If you have a power failure water wont be able to enter the air pump and spoil it.
* Follow instructions for liquid fertilizer.
* Feed him once a day. His belly is the size of his eye only. DO NOT overfeed.
* Make him fast once a week to clean out his digestive system.
Final Edit: It's called Siamese Fighting Fish, not Japanese Fighting Fish. They originate in Siam (Thailand), not Japan. =)
